Gangapur is a city in the district of Aurangabad in Maharashtra. It is also the taluk headquarters of Gangapur taluk. It falls under Marathwada region of Maharashtra. It is situated 46 Kms to the west of Aurangabad, the district headquarters.

About Gangapur

A Brief History of Gangapur

Gangapur was earlier known as Gandapur. According to a local legend, a Muhammedan saint supplied sugarcane juice or Ganda to a ruler who was passing by the city to quench his thirst. Hence, this place was called as Gandapur which later became Gangapur. To mark this, a garden was established here which was called as Shahi Bagh or Royal Garden. But today, this garden is used for cultivation. 

Geography of Gangapur 

Gangapur is situated at 19.6991oN 75.0086o E.  The total area of the city is 4.4 Sq miles and is situated on the western side of the Aurangabad-Ahmednagar Highway.  

Climate of Gangapur

Local steppe climate prevails in Gangapur and the city gets little rainfall during the year. The climate has been classified as BSh by Koppen and Geiger. The annual average temperature of the city is 26.3o C and average annual precipitation is 665 mm. The temperature reaches the highest during May and the lowest during December. 

Administration of Gangapur

The Gangapur city is administered by a Municipal Council. Gangapur municipality was established in the year 1943. The council consists of 15 members with President as the head. Out of the 15 seats, two seats are allocated to women representatives. 

Tourism in Gangapur

The city was surrounded by walls which are destroyed now and only two of the gates are in good condition. Earlier, the agent of Peshva resided here and collected the Maratha’s share of revenue. Even today, ruined Kacheri, the place where he resided could be seen by the travelers. The city also has three temples as well as two mosques which attracts the tourists to the city.

Mahadev Temple

This temple dates back to three centuries and the presiding deity is Lord Shiva. This ancient temple is of high reverence to the locals. Annual fairs are also held in this temple. 

Dargah of Muhammedan saint

This dargah is situated at a short distance from the main city and is dedicated for a Muhammedan saint. This dargah also comes with a garden. Mohinuddin and Mustumia urus, the fairs are held in honour of the Muslim saints during December-January and April-May every year. 

The holy temples such as Vithal Mandir, Narasimha Temple, Ek Mukhi Datta Temple, Gudicha Maroti, Rameshwar temple, etc are also found here in the city. 

Apart from the above, the tourists can visit Aurangabad, Grishneshwar, Shirdi, Ahmednagar and Ozar cities from Gangapur.

Gangapur is well connected by road to other major cities of the Maharashtra state. MSRTC buses as well as private buses operate here. Gangapur does not have a railway station and the nearest railway station is Lasur railway station situated at 26 Kms. Aurangabad is the major railway junction which is situated 40 Kms away from Gangapur. The nearest airport is Chikkalthana airport which is situated 49 Kms away from Gangapur.
